Pair of matching Pegasus of Greek Mythology cast iron bookends with the Snead & Company Iron Works, Inc. and the copyright date of 1925 on the front. In extremely great vintage condition. In the book A Collector's Guide to Cast Metal Bookends by Gerald P. McBride on page 31 he discusses the Snead Company. They were founded in Louisville, Kentucky in 1851. Due to a fire they then transferred to Jersey City, New Jersey in 1898. Later on they opened a plant in Orange, Virginia. It is thought they were out of business eventually in the 1950's. They were a supplier of the shelving utilized in the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, and a few of the Yale University libraries. Mr. McBride says that bookends from Snead & Company were most likely made use of as marketing pieces or offered as part of the library shelving.
These were polished with a high quality preservation wax years ago to avoid any rusting.
They have a copper or bronze finish on them I am really not certain.
Please see the pictures for color, measurements and condition.
